The Ridingate was one Roman entrance into the city. Later, as the road plan of the city altered, it became less important. It's spent some of it's history being bricked up. Now it's an important route for buses who are going to the bus station or to pickup or drop passengers in Rose Lane. It's important for cars too, there are several car parks near to the gate.

The trust undertook a major excavation in March and April 1986. The trust reports contain some large pictures from John Bowen that my scanner is not up to dealing with - someday.
