The Roper Gate

The Roper Gate

The Roper Gate is one of Canterbury's landmarks, but I suspect that many people whizz by in their cars and give it no thought because it appears to be part of a larger brick building that is next to it.

In fact, it's the last remnant of a large 16th Century house that was owned by the Roper family. The gate itself dates back to 1550. The gate was refurbished by the council not so long ago, and the Canterbury Archaeological Trust undertook a study.
