Buttermarket
(Photo 1996)

Buttermarket used to contain a covered market, but that went long ago. It now holds the War Memorial for Canterbury, and just in front of that is a favourite place for street musicians. The square is often filled with long lines of people trying to get into the Cathedral whose main gate is hidden around the corner on the left.

The square poses a little problem for the Tour, because the exits are at different angles. Turning left here takes you quickly past the main gate of the Cathedral and into Burgate. Going ahead takes you into Mercery Lane.
