The buildings on the left are the head office of Barretts. Barretts own this whole corner of the city, and have been here for over 150 years. The site was flattened towards the end of the war, redeveloped, and re-done again in the last 15 or so years. The red brick 'old looking' building is their showroom and offices and is actually recent. Since I originally took a photo here in 1997, the petrol station has gone.
In 1985 this forecourt was developed, and Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated and found a twelfth century pottery kiln complete with pots.
